We have received an extra allocation of tickets both adult and schoolboy for the Ireland v Italy senior match in the Aviva on Sunday kick off 3pm. This was in gratitude for hosting our Italian friends at u20 level in Wilton today.

Celebrating National Library Week

To mark National Library Week here in Pres, students from the Musical Society and Creative Arts Group gathered with 6th year students to  celebrate the Library as a place of sanctuary and creativity.

While the Reading Room in Pres is a wonderful resource for learning and reading, it is also a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the yard and canteen. It is a space in our school without the academic pressures of the classroom where the boys are not directed and assessed and where they can express themselves creatively. We are blessed to have a wonderful librarian and staff to help facilitate this and make it a welcoming and safe  space for all the school community.

So to celebrate our library today, we had an hour of relaxed lamplit music with words and music chosen by the boys themselves; these included famous poems, inspirational quotes and short stories written by the boys, all interspersed with piano, guitar and banjo interludes. Well done everybody!!!

More events to follow after Christmas.

P.B.C. Senior Poetry Awards

The winners of the P.B.C. English Department Senior Poetry Prize was announced yesterday with Sam O Connell taking first prize for his work, 'Siren Sounds.' Well done to Sam on his impressive poem. Judge Sophie McKenzie had this to say:

-        Wonderful work. Siren sounds is both a good idea to build a poem around and a nice alliterative sound in its own right. The focus on sounds gives this poem a strong identity, with each verse getting a distinct layer of sound – the initial surprise of the siren blast, then the reaction of birds, then the return to the peaceful neutrality of water. A serene, thoughtful poem

In 2nd and 3rd place respectively came Liam Keville and Eoin Harrington whose work merited these comments:

 Escape to Zinzargorne

-        Liam Keville sent in three very interesting poems, and I was tempted to give the nod to The Fog, purely for its wonderfully eerie Halloween atmosphere. In the end, though, Escape to Zingzargorne won me over with its evocative descriptions and strange lyricism. There’s a tinge of old-fashioned science fiction in the vision of Zingzargorne, a bit of H.G. Wells and John Carter of Mars, and that’s a unique and compelling vision for a poem to evoke.

Eoin HarringtonFlowing

Some nice techniques used here – the most obvious being the repetition of flowing, flowing, flowing at the end of each verse, mimicking the ceaseless steady flow of the river itself. I also really like the poet’s use of alliteration – rushing roaring rapids rage and A sudden stop, splashes fly which really help the poem to, well, flow!

The winning students were presented with the following poetry collections by Principal David Barry in the P.B.C. Reading Room:

1st PLACE: Sam O’Connell. Prize: Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake

2nd PLACE: Liam Keville. Prize: Beowulf by Seamus Heaney

3rd PLACE: Eoin Harrington. Prize: New Weather by Paul Muldoon

The boys later gave a reading of their winning entries to a gathering of Senior students and Deputy Prinicpal Aelín O Donoghue addressed them about the importance of reading and creating a culture of reading and creativity, both within the students and in the school itself.

Well done to everybody involved, to all the students who entered and their teachers, to management for their support and most especially to Librarian Sophie McKenzie for her tireless reading and wonderful judging.
