Library/ Reading Room Report

This September in the library we welcomed back our old students with a slew of brand new titles and introduced our First Years to the Reading Room
BOOK OF THE MONTH
The new school year has seen some students picking up classic titles like 'Kidnapped,' 'Robinson Crusoe' and 'Moby Dick.' However, the most popular book of September came from an author a little closer to home.
The first in a seven-book series, Gerard Siggins' 'Rugby Spirit' is a 170 page romp aimed at readers aged 11-13, all about the adventures of a young boy at a rugby-mad boarding school who becomes the star of the school team.- with a little help from the ghost of his grandfather, a former champion rugby player.
These books will obviously appeal to any young sports fan and it's clear to see why the students here at Pres love these books so much! With 7 of these books to enjoy, fans will have plenty to keep them interested.
Readers looking for more of the same may enjoy Tom Palmer's 'Rugby Academy' series while Andrew Smith's novel 'Winger' is a great choice for older readers looking to move on.
All of these books and much much more available at the Library.

Congratulations to Matthew Wilkins (4th Year), Oscar Naughton (3rd Year) and Jack Sheehan (1st Year), who represented PBC in the recent Munster Schools' Combined Events Championships. All athletes performed admirably, with special mention for both Matthew and Oscar, who finished in the top 10 of their respective age groups.
In Combined Events competitions all athletes compete in all 5 events (Hurdles, Shot Putt, Long Jump, 200m and 800m) and earn points based on their performance in each individual event. It's extremely challenging as athletes must be technically proficient in a wide variety of disciplines, so well done all!

The Rowing Ireland National Championships took place at the National Rowing Centre, Inniscarra this past weekend and our junior 18 squad created some Pres rowing history! The crew of Eoghan Aherne, Ben Mullane, Rex O'Sullivan, Andrew O'Leary, Sam Hernan, Adam Hartley, Darragh Buckley, Leo Porion and cox, Noah Giltinan finished third in the Men's Junior 18 Eight final, the first ever podium finish for the club in this highly competitive event.
The crew qualified comfortably from their heat to progress to the final where they faced some stiff competition from boats across the country. Pres came home in the bronze medal position ahead of Methodist College, Belfast and Castleconnell BC, Limerick. St. Joseph's College, Galway and Enniskillen Royal BC, two clubs who have traditionally dominated this event, finished first and second respectively.
This is an outstanding result for Pres in a race which showcases the best of Irish rowing talent in the Junior 18 category. What makes it even more impressive is that each member of the boat is underage again next season. Well done to the entire crew, the wider squad and all the coaches for finishing off what has been such a successful season with this fantastic result on the biggest stage.
Eoghan Aherne, Andrew O'Leary, Rex O'Sullivan, Ben Mullane and Noah Giltinan also managed to reach the final of the Men's Junior 18 Four where they finished 5th in the country, while the B Four of Darragh Buckley, Adam Hartley, Sam Hernan, Leo Porion and Jack Carroll only narrowly missed out on qualification for the final in the same event.
Earlier in the weekend, the Men's Junior 16 Quad of Darrach Fanning, Brian O'Leary, John Neville, Cian Timoney and Jack Carroll had a strong row in their event which bodes well for next season for the young crew.
The rowers now take a well earned break until September, apart from Andrew O'Leary and Noah Giltinan who travel to Spain on August 5th to represent Ireland at the Coupe de le Jeunesse as part of the Men's Coxed Four crew. We again wish them the very best of luck.

PBC Podcast- season 2 episode 5 - the Finale!

That’s all Folks!
To wrap up the season, Ronan McAuliffe is joined by a very special co-host - none other than teacher Kieran Ahern who takes a final bow and curtain call on his teaching days in PBC. Mr Ahern who is also a well established actor, played a vital role in introducing drama & theatre to the school & helped build the fully equipped tv and radio studio in Pres back in the 80s. He looks back on his acting career as well as his 6 decades in the school.
We also hear from local legend and former Pres boy, Stevie G on his lengthy and varied career as a DJ, journalist & radio presenter in an in-depth interview with Liam Ring.
Sticking with the musical theme, teacher David O Riordan discusses music, creativity and the re-established PBC Music Society while Adam Hartley, Mattie O Flynn and Liam Keville chat about the importance of having a musical output for students in Pres followed by a slow and dreamy acoustic sample of ‘ Evening Sunsets over Monroeville,’ by Liam Ring.
Our in house gaming expert Eoin Harrington takes a deep dive into the gaming industry with former Blizzard employee Paul Mc Sherry( apologies for poor sound quality here) while Sebastian O Donoghue goes underground with a piece on the Tube in London.
Finally, Fore! Ryan Lyons tells us about his golfing passion.
Well done to the TY podcasters and 5th year mentor, Ronan McAuliffe on a wonderful year's work. They are so deserving of a listen so tune in now! Click below to listen on Apple or Spotify - also available on acast.
