Summer Programme For Interested 1st Years
Created : 31 May 2022, 11:17 AM
Archived : 31 Jul 2022, 12:00 AM
Letters were sent home yesterday to parents/guardians of a number of mainly 1st year students whom, we believed, would be interested and would benefit from the Summer School Programme which begins next Tuesday. If your son has missed out on school days for whatever reason, and you believe he could do with the extra literacy, numeracy plus the life skills, PE and IT skills, you are very welcome to ring the school office to put your son's name forward. If you have done so already, it is my fault that the secretary did not know it was open to others, and I would ask you to ring again, leaving your name and contact number. I will get back to you today.
What is the Summer Programme? It will start next Tuesday 7th June, and finish on Friday 17th June - 9 days - from 10am to 3pm each day. There is no cost to the student and they do not wear a uniform. Lunch will be provided each day. The daily activites will include: Literacy, Numeracy, IT skills such as coding, Life skills ( we envisage some cooking, woodwork/metalwork) and PE. It will all be done in a relaxed and enjoyable environment and will aim at improving their literacy and numeracy which they may have missed out on or fallen behind on with lockdown etc.
Time is short to get it up and running. I need to know how many students are definitely registering so I can organise the teachers and the classes. Have a think about it. It is not for everybody but it is for some. I hope to have everyone's name by tomorrow, Wednesday. Thank you.

Today our Transition Year Students had a soccer blitz with SCR Portlaoise. 11 teams of 6aside competed with a mix of boys and girls on each team. There were some fantastic goals and performances on the day but there could only be one winner.
Pictured here are the winning team who were treated to some pizza as crowned champs. Well done to Alison Dalton, Tara Byrne, Eoin O’Kelly, Paddy Reddin, Joe Byrne and Aoibheann Swaglis. We would like to thank SCR for taking part and being such good sports throughout the day. Well done all!

Dear Parents/Guardians,
As we approach the end of a near normal school year, we hope that your son’s school experience has been enhanced this year by the return of all our school activities, both academic and extra-curricular. It has been a pleasure to see the Perspex screens come down around the school, the masks disappear and most of all, sports and trips away return on a daily basis – we are now so grateful for what we took for granted in the past! I want to thank you and your sons for your resilience and compliance during the last two years of unprecedented uncertainty.
As we are now in the last term of the current school year I would like to draw your attention to the following:
• The annual Re-Admission Form is now on our School App in the Consent Forms Section for your submission and must be submitted on or before Thursday June 9th 2022. You will receive personal notifications on the app until it is submitted. Even if your son is not returning, we should be informed.
• Payment of Student Personal Accident Insurance – compulsory for all students this year - €10 – to be paid through the App
• Payment of the Voluntary Contribution - € 92 for one student / €122 for two or more – online through Shop / School Payments on the App
All students MUST pay the Student Insurance before they return to school in the last week of August. No student will be allowed to take part in PE, extracurricular activities, school trips, etc. until this is paid.
We depend on the Voluntary Contribution to fund all extra-curricular activities (sports and educational trips), the provision of buses, photocopying, postage, texting home when students are absent, lunchtime activities, etc. The provision of sport in the school alone costs us in the region of €40,000 each year.
In addition, the provision of online services such as VSware, Microsoft 365 for all students and the School App cost us approximately €25,000 per year. While these digital services are the only way to go in 2022, they appear to be invisible compared to postage and paper, yet they do come with a price tag which must be funded from our Voluntary Contributions. I think most of you will agree that our provision of these online and up to date services are what you expect from a school which has never been found wanting in the most modern methods of communication and payments. They keep you updated on a daily basis, allow you to pay online from the comfort of your home, and are available on your mobile phone. Without this contribution, many of the above facilities could not be provided. I would be grateful if this contribution could be paid during the summer, if not at the time of submission of the Re-Admission Form.
I would also be grateful if you could provide up to date contact numbers/addresses and emergency contact numbers for our use in the coming school year.
The Main Office closes on Friday June 24th at 1pm and re-opens on August 15th at 10am. Phones will not be answered during that holiday period.
If a parent/student has a very urgent issue which MUST be dealt with during July, you may contact me on mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com. Otherwise, please wait until August 8th and I will deal with it then.
The Booklists, iPad Information, Book Rental Information and more will continue to be updated and provided on the school website and on the App. Having the school App is the best way to keep informed, as I update it regularly throughout the summer as necessary. If there is an urgent problem or issue which arises during the summer which needs my immediate attention, you may email me on mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com. If it can wait until August 8th, please wait until then and I will deal with it on my return to the office.
Additional fees such as subject fees for Art, Woodwork, Metalwork, Graphics, DCG, Home Economics, and several more should be paid on the App as well. (Shop/School Payments) Due to the massive increase in the cost of steel and wood in particular, these subject fees have been increased substantially. We regret this, but it is unavoidable.
For your information, school will reopen for students on Thursday August 25th and half days will continue until the first Monday in September – the 5th.
• Incoming 1st years will begin on Tuesday August 23rd with their Induction Day.
• No student will attend school on Wednesday 24th August, as teachers will have a training day.
• Thursday 25th August – 1st Years come in – 9.00 to 1.15
• Friday 26th – 1st & 6th Years attend – 9.00 to 1.15
• Monday 29th – 1st, 6th, 3rd Years attend – 9.00 to 1.15
• Tuesday 30th – 1st, 6th, 3rd 5th Years attend – 9.00 to 1.15
• Wednesday 31st - 1st, 6th, 3rd 5th 2nd Years attend – 9.00 to 1.15
• Thursday 1st September – All classes including TY’s attend – 9.00 to 1.15
• Friday 2nd September – All classes attend – 9.00 to 1.15
• Monday 5th September – All classes attend full day 9.00 to 4.00
When students attend for the first morning in August, they should have paid the €20 online for their journal and locker (yes, they will be back) This will streamline the morning activities considerably. Thank you.
There is no Book Rental for 5th / 6th Years – there is School Aid if you go to the school website, you will see School Aid. Please download that form, complete and submit to the office.
First Years wishing to do Book Rental should contact the school office immediately. We will extend the closing date until June 3rd, but full payment of €200 will be required by that date. No new applicants will be accepted after June 3rd, unless they are late admissions to the school.
All information for the purchase of iPads is available on the school website. Mr G Brennan is the iPad Coordinator and any queries should be emailed to him. gbrennan@portlaoisecbs.com
Rafters will return to the school canteen in September and we look forward to the availability of in house lunches.
I wish you all a relaxing and refreshing summer, and hopefully we will get the good weather to enjoy the long evenings. Take care.
Yours sincerely,
Maura Murphy
Principal
