In recent months over 9,500 people have been sleeping rough on the streets of Ireland, of this 3,690 of those are children.
In order to do our part in helping with this crisis some of the transition year students here in St. Mary's C.B.S. have decided to hold a sponsored sleep out on Friday the 12th of October in the school grounds, in association with the 'Shine a Light' campaign.
All donations received will go directly to the Focus Ireland charity in order to help them on their mission to combat homelessness.

Well done to Niall Carey who delivered a speech on Saturday morning in front of County Hall to commemorate Col James Fitzmaurice, a past pupil of the CBS.
Col Fitzmaurice was commemorated for the historic first East West transatlantic flight, with flypast and wreath laying, at the county hall. There is also an exhibition in the Dunamaise Arts Centre.
This was a very a fitting way to honour a great Laois man and past student of our school.
Once again well done to Niall and all those involved in the commemoration.
The exhibition runs until the 24th of October in the Dunamaise arts centre. See poster attached for further information!
Our School Mass Thursday October 4th

On Thursday our teachers and students came together in the Parish Church to celebrate our annual School Mass. It is the only opportunity for our entire school to join each other in the same place, facing the same direction, and be a true community, which we are. Father Paddy and Father Vard prayed the Mass, which included students of all faiths and none. This Mass is not about being a Catholic. Yes, we are a Catholic school. But for the staff and students it is about joining together at the start of the school year and focusing on the school year ahead and saying a prayer, having a thought in their own way, for that year ahead to go well for themselves and all of us. The music was provided by our own students who play accordion, guitars, pipes and tin whistle. It was beautiful. In particular, Cian MacGearailt played and sang the Psalm which was amazingly beautiful. Our Religion Department put hours of work into organizing readings, gifts, prayers of the faithful, who would carry out the many readings and jobs and it ran beautifully. Many thanks to them who do a lovely job year after year.
