On Thursday, 4 Elm ventured to the Lasalle Retreat Centre in Castletown, Co Laois for a few hours of well-being and time away from the hustle and bustle of life. They worked in socially distanced pods and rotated between different activities which included meditation and a mindful walk in the gloriously sunny and beautiful grounds of the centre. This group were fabulous. They engaged completely with all tasks much to the delight of the facilitators and their positivity was commendable. Feedback from the students themselves was excellent. Many thanks to Ms. Melia for accompanying them.

The weather was showery and breezy but it was still a very enjoyable trip for all. Thank you to all the teachers who accompanied the students to Rosslare over the two days.

On Friday March 26th last, our Student Council had the amazing opportunity of participating in ISSU Student Council training. The ISSU (Irish Second Level Student Union) is the representative body for second level students in Ireland. It was founded in 2008 and currently has over 400 member schools in Ireland. The ISSU site (www.issu.ie) is very informative and from here, students can apply for workshops and events on a variety of issues. The training focused on team work and how to get the most from our Student Council. We also looked at ways to promote our council and the work we do within our school. The trainer gave us many ideas to work on and in particular, we are planning on having more of a presence on social media. This is something that we are going to work on after the Easter holidays. We also completed an exercise using a SWOT analysis. A SWOT analysis is a tool that can help in decision making. As part of the training, students were shown how to use the SWOT analysis to decide if an idea/initiative would be suitable to present to school management. Our business teachers will be delighted to hear that we will be using them going forward! The training was very insightful and showed the council ways to work effectively and how to work as a team. It also taught our members how to work within our school community in a respectful and desirable way. We took a survey after the training and 100% of attendees said that they enjoyed the session and would recommend it to other schools. To quote one of our members ‘A great time was had by all’. Happy Easter from your Student Council!

Many of our fifth year students got to sit back and enjoy a streamed production of Eclipsed this afternoon. Written by Patricia Burke-Brogan, and directed by Kate Canning the award winning play is set in a Magdalene laundry during the 1960s. The play is poignant, funny and insightful. It sheds light on the day to day life of women in the laundries, but it is also a tale of friendship, hope and survival. Students are studying this play as part of their Leaving Certificate English comparative study. We hope their experience today will enrich and support their study of this wonderful play.

Best of luck to the 4 TY Mini companies selected to represent Colaiste Bhride in the Wicklow County Final of the Student Enterprise Programme. This year, due to COVID restrictions, all TY students took part in the programme as Sole Traders as working in groups was not always possible. Students set up a TY Market Day in December which was a great success. All students prepared their Business Reports and those students interested in entering the competition sent their reports to be judged. Congratulations to the following four students who were selected to represent our school in the County Wicklow Final tomorrow.
