Congratulations to Aine Sharry, 3rd Year who was selected for the only Pony Club mounted games team that travelled abroad this year. Aine, who is a Shillelagh Pony Club member, was joined by three other team members from Tipperary, Wexford and Kildare P.C’s. The competition took place in Bath and West Showgrounds, England. Mounted games is a team competition that requires courage, determination and skill as well as speed and breath-taking accuracy. Games involve vaulting, flag poles, bending poles, sack race, cow race and many more exciting activities. This Irish team made it to the “A” final in the main arena which was a real achievement and they were narrowly beaten. However, they did not return home empty handed as they received the overall Sportsmanship Trophy. Well done to the team!

Our first Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) of the school year At 12.50 today, all of Coláiste Bhríde stopped what they were doing and picked up a book. Students and teachers were encouraged to sit back and relax with a book for 30 minutes. It was a lovely way to end the school day on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. We now look forward to our DEAR week in October where we will have 30 minutes a day for a full week dedicated to reading as a whole school. Well done everyone!

Well done to our Senior Ladies Football team who overcame a very strong St Kevin’s Dunlavin side on Wednesday morning, with a final score line of 2-8 to 4-11. Carnew got off to a strong start in the first quarter leading 1-3 to 0-2 at the waterbreak, Lucy Kemple taking a wonderful goal off her left foot to give us the lead. A good comeback from the home side in the second quarter meant we went into half time just 2 points ahead, a second goal from Lucy keeping us ahead. But the CBC girls hit their stride in the second half. Goals from Karen Tomkins and Eimer Mutton allowed us to build up a nice lead going into the waterbreak. A few quick breaks from Laci-Jane Shannon and Karen Tomkins and some great defensive work from Caoimhe Murphy and Emma Tomkins allowed us to pull ahead in the final quarter and claim our first win in this year’s Leinster Championship. Well done to all involved. Scorers Lucy Kemple 2-3 Laci-Jane Shannon 0-3 Karen Tomkins 1-0 Eimer Mutton 1-0 Eimear O’Brien 0-2 Emma Tomkins 0-1 Shauna O’Shea 0-1 Aoife Stafford 0-1

On Thursday the Transition Year Future Leaders class organised a blitz for all first year footballers. The group was divided into 7 teams. The boys teams consisted of Antrim, Wexford, Kildare and Monaghan. Each team played off in three hotly contested rounds. After the group stage the semi final pairings pitched Kildare against Wexford and Monaghan with Antrim. Wexford defeated Kildare comfortably with Antrim overcoming Monaghan. When the final came around Wexford raced into a 12 point lead, However Antrim battled hard in the second half to salvage a draw and force the game to extra time. In extra time however Wexford re-asserted their dominance to snatch the victory. The girls competition was a much tighter affair throughout. Wicklow, Galway and Armagh were the three teams involved. Armagh went straight to the final unbeaten, while Galway and Wicklow met in the semi-final. Galway qualified for the final against the fancied and unbeaten Armagh side. Galway came into the game as underdogs and thrived with this tag. They took a commanding lead heading into half time with their ability to score goals a big factor in their victory. Armagh battled back in the second half, but Galway held on for the victory. A huge amount of credit must be given to the TY Future Leaders students who organised and co-ordinated this event over the last couple of weeks. Each student was assigned a role and executed it brilliantly. Credit also must go to the first year students who behaved impeccably throughout the day. Well done to all.

All TY ESS students carried out a study of coastal geomorphic processes along Rosslare Strand over a two day period, Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th October. The purpose of the trip was to engage all the students in field work activity which is a component of the LC Geography curriculum. It involved a number of activities which included calculating wave frequency, the process of longshore drift, analysis of beach material, evaluating the beach profile, height of a cliff, sketching the beach and finally measuring the impact of groynes on sediment transport and deposition. All students engaged fully with all the activities which was helped by glorious sunshine on both days. Special thanks to all the teachers who conducted the fieldwork with the students: Mr. Davies, Mr. Lambert, Mr. Fitzgerald, Mr. Douglas, Ms. Neville and a special thanks to Ms. Rickerby who was drafted in and now is looking to switch departments!!!
