1st year Rugby CBS v Salesian College

Today the First Year team displayed some brilliant rugby as they battled a well fought match against Salesian College, Celbridge. From 1 to 19, the lads showed great heart and determination throughout the full 50 minutes. The team was lead out by captain of the day Ciaran “Spud” McCormack. CBS kicked off into the bright sunshine of Togher. Owen McGowan's kickoff instantly set the CBS forwards on the attack. A brilliant turnover from Robert Keane left the visitors thinking on their feet. The ball was spread to Darren Dunne, the debutant broke many tackles and powered over the line for his first try. Salesians responded excellently, playing some neat rugby and exploiting the wings to score their first try of the game. The game got off to a rocky start for the CBS, who seemed to take a while to settle into their role. It took 3 excellent line breaks from the visiting Salesians to knock some sense into the CBS defense. Portlaoise had to shake things up and begin to respond quickly, and did so. McGowen kicked high and CBS got the ball back, and again, with some neat play, they were making the yards. Evan Brophy leading the team on. Brophy was all over the field today putting in big tackles left, right and center. Another debutant, David Apopei whose powerful runs all day were a big factor of the game, gaining many valuable yards for the CBS boys. Dunne again showed his excellent footwork receiving the ball on the opposition’s 22 and powering through many failed tackle attempts and over the line three more times. Paddy Fitzpatrick also putting valuable points on the board with a try for the CBS. Overall, this was an excellent game of rugby, with a superb first performance from the CBS lads, and we look forward to seeing what they produce in the coming weeks! Watch this space.

All Ireland U19 A Schools Quarter Final
National Basketball Arena, Tallaght

St Marys CBS Portlaoise 65
St Malachys College Belfast 72
CBS travelled to the national basketball arena in Tallaght last Monday in the hope of reaching the All Ireland semi-final later that day and even the final later in the month, but their first task was to take on St Malachys College of Belfast. CBS fought hard in the qualifiers two weeks previous in Galway which saw them earn victories over Coláiste Iognáid and Douglas CS to be in the draw for the quarter finals. CBS knew what they had to do to keep the semi final and final in sight.
A strong start from CBS began with Rian O’ Connell opening the scoring followed by three 3-pionters by captain James Phelan and Dylan Phelan(2) but Malachys wouldn’t let Portlaoise get the run of themselves as they quickly tied the game at 14-14 although D Phelan had added two more baskets for Portlaoise. Another 3-pionter from J Phelan was the last bit of action for Portlaoise in the opening quarter but Malachys pushed into a six-point lead, 23-17, complimentary of Fulton on form for the Belfast team.
The second quarter seen O’ Connell put up some good scores as he was dominating inside but some tough refereeing decisions cost him time on the floor. As a result, Ryan and Fulton stepped up with further scores for the opposition. O’ Connell had massed 9 points alone while D Phelan, J Phelan, Conroy and O’ Reilly also pointed for Portlaoise. Although it was Portlaoise who outscored Belfast in the quarter, it St. Malachy’s with a three-point lead at the half.
The Portlaoise men regrouped at the half and were hoping to bounce back and finish the game strong, but again it was Belfast who were controlling the game and points from Ryan, Doherty and Fulton covered up Portlaoise’s D Phelan, J Phelan and Conroy’s scores. A big 3-pointer from J Phelan at the end of the quarter seen the deficit cut to six as we ended into the last quarter.
Peter Duignan and his players had a roaring crowd of supporters behind them as they looked to empty their tanks and reach the semi-final, both teams traded scores but Portlaoise found it difficult to eat into the lead that Belfast held for most of the game, but credit to Portlaoise men as they kept pressing and pressuring the Belfast team but it would be too little too late as Malachys ran out convincing seven point winners which left the Portlaoise men abegging as their year had come to a close. It was a game that CBS would feel they could have won but unfortunately it was not to be.
The core of this team has brought huge success for the school over the last number of years winning six regional titles, U14 ‘B’ All Ireland Gold medal and an U19 All Ireland ‘A’ Bronze medal. Well done to the team and their Coach - Peter Duignan.
