Due to the Ceremony of Light being held on Wednesday February 12th, which many 6th class students and their parents will be attending, we have moved our Information Evening to Thursday February 13th at 7 pm. We understand two evenings out in a row are difficult but as the Midterm Break begins the day after, households may be more relaxed than on a weeknight after the Midterm. We are also aware that 6th class have a very busy calendar and it seems to be a free night for all. Thank you very much to the parents who rang our office to tell us the Confirmation event was happening on the 12th. This will be a very important night for your son’s entry into 1st year. Please ensure that one parent/guardian from each household manages to attend. You have made the decision to send your son to us - now there are more decisions to make for when he arrives. This night is about giving you that Information and answering any questions you may have. We look forward to welcoming you all on the 13th at 7 pm.

The Board of Management of St Marys CBS made the decision last Wednesday evening to close the school to students this coming Tuesday for health and safety issues arising from the TUI Industrial Action on that day. All students were given a letter to take home to their parents/guardians last Thursday regarding this closure. We regret the loss of class teaching time, but the health and safety of our students on the day must be our first priority. Our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Cultural Diversity Day Launch
Created : 30 Jan 2020, 2:35 PM
Archived : 30 Mar 2020, 12:00 AM
Due to the ever-changing nature of the school we have decided to hold an event on March 6th to highlight the variety of cultures which characterise our community as a whole. Our aim is to dedicate a specific day in recognition of the cultural diversity in our school. We hope to showcase the different nationalities and the best aspects of each native country's culture. Today marked the Launch of the Cultural Diversity Day with Ireland being chosen as the first stall to be displayed as an example of what to expect from others. Pictured are Thomas Dunne and William Oxley beside their stall. On the day, stalls will be set up with each nation being represented. Students will be encouraged to showcase artifacts, personal belongings, posters and flags. A significant aspect of the day will also enable students and teachers to fully embrace the opportunity to taste new food and learn about the different cultures represented in the school. The dream and vision for the day is to celebrate an event which engages all concerned and instills enthusiasm in how the school community presents its story in an accurate, proud and tasteful manner. A core group of Student Leaders have come together to help organise the event which will encapsulate the arts and cultures of countries across the globe. Any student, parent or member of the school community who is interested in participating in any way or who wishes to assist in any way please feel free to contact Mr Brennan over the coming weeks. All assistance is welcomed.
School Closure Information

As expected, all schools in the country are closed from 4pm this evening. We have been told that these measure of containment will be in place until March 29th, meaning schools will re-open on March 30th. The Easter Holidays begin 5 days later, on April 3rd. Obviously, nobody really knows what the time frame for any of these measures is, it depends on how Covid-19 spreads in the coming weeks. Hopefully two weeks will do it. We are particularly aware of the 3rd and 6th years' situation. To support them in their studies, there has been a huge amount of work done in the last week preparing the students to access their Microsoft 365/Teams/OneNote resources. By the time they left this evening, all students have been sorted with regards to their logins and passwords, if they needed sorting. We asked the students to begin taking their books home earlier this week. I have already put up the details on this app of how to download the e-books for Edco and Folens publishers onto any device at home, even if your son doesn't use an iPad. At this time, the iPads will come in very handy as a student device. I will also put the instructions on the app which Gill Publishers sent today for students to download their texts, should they wish to. The 1st, 2nd, 5th and TY's also have school and project work to do which they can access via their Microsoft 365 platform. The State Exams Commission has yet to give us any future exam times - as this is early days yet. Any information i receive will be put out to students/parents via this app as soon as I receive it. We cannot begin to guess dates for practicals, orals, projects or briefs until there is an end to this closure. As every school and student in the country is in the same boat, no one is a loser - except those who choose to do no study at home. The other situation which has to be dealt withis the TY trip to Cologne. As it stands today, the trip is not cancelled. But that does not mean it is going ahead either. With the Ski Trip to Italy, we held out long enough that all was cancelled at the right time and we have secured 100% refund for the parents. For Cologne, when I have anything to tell you (as we get closer) I will be in contact with that group of parents by text/app. Right now it is far too early to say how we can get the money back or will it be deferred to next year. I am always in favour of a refund to the pocket rather than promises of trips next year, so we will see. But I will communicate with those students/parents when I know anything more. I understand this is a very difficult time for parents - with younger children out of schools and creches you will find it harder to get to work yourself. This will have a knock on effect for every aspect of our lives, as a country. Teenagers at home unsupervised may also be a worry to many of you. They in turn may not wish to be the new babysitters or childminders! We hope this is just a 2 week window of extreme measures. I wish you all good health in the coming weeks and months. My email is mmurphy@portlaoisecbs.com if any of you wish to contact me during this time out. I hope that many of you can find some positive in this break from our usual routine. Take care and stay healthy. MM
