On Thursday, 26 January, in blustery and cold conditions Marian College competed in the 2017 East Leinster Cross-Country Championships in Rathdrum, Wicklow. 20 students took part in four different age groups and our Junior team finished their race in third place in the team event, winning bronze. There was also a strong performance by Jad Hakiki, finishing 4th in the Minor event, just missing out on a medal. Well done to all our students who represented the school brilliantly on the day.

The 1st and 2nd year school basketball teams opened up their seasons with narrow defeats to local rivals St. Conleths in the South Dublin Basketball League.
The first years started the game slowly as all team members were playing basketball for the first time but were able to do a great job in the second half making it a close game and narrowly losing 14-10.
The 2nd year team were up against stiff competition as St. Conleths have a team that consists of 3 club players compared to the Marian team that have no club players. In spite of this the team performed very well but unfortunately couldn't finish enough of their lay-up opportunities to close out the game and ended up losing by 9 points 39-30.

Hard luck to Captain Dean Gleeson, Coach Alison Bird and all the junior squad on their defeat by St Benildus in the Junior Shield on Wednesday. It was a hugely spirited and dogged display by the team who scored 4 great tries through Josh Whelan, Dean Gleeson, Mark Escabarte and David McKenna.
