On Wednesday Irish Olympian Natalya Coyle visited Marian as part of the Sky Sports Living For Sport Project which will be kicking off in the next few weeks. The initiative by Sky Sports sees an athlete mentor come to a school and help a number of students plan a project related to physical activity with their school. This was our mentor, Natalya's first visit to our school. She competed in the modern pentathlon event at the London Olympics in 2012 and is currently qualifying for the games in Rio which take place later this year. All first years met Natalya and were impressed by her enthusiasm and love for sport and her physical activity. There was information about planning a project and a great question and answer session where students asked Natalya about her sport, nutrition and her travels around the world in competition!

BT Young Scientist competition has been ongoing for the last three days with Marian Colleges project stirring up lots of interest from many areas. We have had hugely positive feedback from judges, political parties and students from all over Ireland who have stopped by to question our transition years about GMOS. The experience of taking part has opened up many different opportunities for Marian College, from entering further competitions to making an appearance on television. We have been invited to take part in the United Nations young environmentalist competition, we have also been asked by Gorta to join their African initiative, both incredibly exciting prospects for the future. Kevin Humphreys, Minister of State, who grew up close to the college came by for a chat with the group yesterday and was left very impressed by the eloquent and passionate responses given by the students. We were also visited by a Fianna Gael TD. Dorian Dederko was interviewed by TV3, so keep an eye out for him tomorrow morning

The BT Young Scientist competition kicked off today with a powerful and compelling speech by President Micheal D Higgins. He focused on the huge contribution that irish scientists play on a global scale and that possibly, amongst the 4616 students that are entered, may be a Nobel prize winner of the future. There are over 2000 projects entered this year, with 367 schools across Ireland being represented. Marian College is one of the few schools that were chosen from over 5000 entries to display our project. Our project was the brainchild of three transition year students ( Dorian Dederko, Dean Gleeson and Ewan Jarvis) who have worked incredibly hard since September on what may be a slightly controversial topic. We are aiming to clear up some misconceptions about genetic modification, and also show the important role it may play in the future. There will be 60000 people visiting the RDS in the coming days, with Science students from Marian College being split between Thursday and Friday. We wish our students the best of luck with their project.

Two Olympic champions visited our sports hall today to meet first and transition year students who participated in the Dublin City Council boxing programme. They both spoke to a captivated audience of students and teachers talking about their passion for boxing and the importance of sport in life. A number of boys got the chance to ask Katie some questions about her Olympic triumph, her training and her involvement in sports. It was a fantastic finish to a very sporting year in Marian!
U19 BASKETBALL FINISH RUNNER-UP IN DUBLIN

The U19 basketball team put in a great performance in the Dublin final against St Kevins but unfortunately came up just short. The team has played excellent basketball all year in reaching the final and have managed to qualify for the All-Ireland playoffs despite losing the final. In front of a loud Marian College crowd the team got off to a slow start offensively but some great defense at the other end kept the score close. As the game went on and the players got more and more into the game we were able to claw back the early deficit. All players were involved in the final which was a great sign of the strength in depth this team has. With a big run early in the 4th quarter the lads showed the never-say-die Marian College attitude and were able to get it to a 3 possession game. Unfortunately we just couldn't make enough shots down the stretch to tie the game up and St Kevins managed to hold on for the win. It was a great performance by the team and we look forward now to competing in the All-Ireland playoffs in the new year.
