1st Year Rugby Blitz

The 1st Year Rugby team competed in the Harry Nicholls Cup Blitz yesterday. They started very well by defeating Kildare Town CS 18-0 and followed up with another win over Nass CBS 12-10 with a last minute try to seal a place in the semi final. They took on Laois rivals, Mountrath CS in the semi final and won 10-7, with a great team effort for a last minute try again to prevail. They were up against CPC Kilcullen in the final. The game started well for the Portlaoise side but unfortunately a penalty and a converted try by Kilcullen late in the game prevented a comeback. The boys were gutted but were proud of themselves for reaching the Cup Final in what was a very tough competition. Throughout the course of the day, they played excellently as a team and there were standout performances from Shane Foley, Mark Ging, Joe Larkin, Andrew Whelan and Daniel Downey against Naas CBS in particular. Well done lads! #fromeachhisbest

Live Interview with Astronaut Chris Hadfield

1st Year Canice and 2nd Year Eric had the opportunity to hear Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield speak today in a live interview organised by Education Support Centres Ireland. He has travelled to space on 3 different missions and commanded the International Space Station. He famously played and sang David Bowie's Space Oddity while floating weightless through the ISS. Today he spoke about how he prepared from a young age to become an astronaut, what daily life on board the ISS was like, such as washing hair, and preparing food, what it was like to go on a space walk and how being in zero gravity effects the human body. We learned that the astronauts on the ISS are on the same time zone as Ireland so we wake up the time as the astronauts and when they blast off from Florida, the first land they see is Ireland. We even got to meet his dog Henry! It was a fascinating talk with an emphasis on how students can be preparing now to help them achieve their dreams. ‍
