Last Thursday March 24th our Meitheal Team attended their graduation ceremony in St. Peter and St. Paul Church along with teams from the county. They received their certs from Bishop Denis Nulty who spoke of how challenging the task of Meitheal leadership has been this past year and yet the Meitheal leaders achieved so much. He recounted the multiple activities that our own leaders were involved in such as induction days, football leagues, retreats, trip to the cinema, and quizzes. We are very proud of the boys and grateful for their commitment and enthusiasm. The evening ended with a quote from Oscar Romero... ‘We are prophets of a future not our own’. #fromeachhisbest

The Students and Staff of St. Mary’s CBS Portlaoise have come together to sing the song Imagine by John Lennon to promote peace and prosperity around the world.
As seen in the music video, directed and arranged by Ms. Mairead Carroll, the students pack dozens of donated supplies into three lorries driven by Martley’s Transport Portlaoise. Various local groups and schools under the leadership of Ms. Eimear Lewens, who ran the campaign to gather donations for shipment to Ukraine, collected the supplies.
With the full support of the student’s the convoy was waved off on its long journey last Monday. The lorry convoy is currently travelling through Europe, on its way to the border of Ukraine, with the hundreds of donated supplies to aid those affected by the war.
This rendition of Imagine is being released to promote Multicultural & Anti-Racism Week at St. Mary’s CBS. All students’ nationalities are celebrated and united with pride and the song certainly expresses that message of unity. Multicultural Week is organised by Mr. Conor Ryan, Ms. Martina Murphy and the Multicultural Committee and saw the whole school come together to celebrate the 45 different countries represented in our school community. The celebrations included guest speakers from Laois Integration Network, Laois Partnership, An Garda Siochana and a food tasting experience for every year group.
The song was recorded and arranged by Ms. Mairead Carroll with instrumentals and vocals by Matthew O’Rourke, Antoni Calka, Karl Mulligan, Mr. Ruairi Tierney, Ms. Nirmala Conlon, Mr. Richard Doyle, Ms. Emily Barrett, Prosper Alonzo, Mr. Conor Ryan, Ms. Yvonne Eglington, Dinny Whelan, Adam Raji, Ms. Evelyn Quinlan, Evidence Onyebuchi and is opened by Ms. Elaine Deegan with a special thanks to Devin Walsh and Aaron O’Connor for all their help.
Thanks also to Jim from Hughes Pharmacy, Mark Martley, Portlaoise Stone and everyone in our community who supports St Mary’s CBS.

Portlaoise CBS travelled to Donnybrook last Wednesday the 16th of March for the Pat Rossiter Junior Cup Final. Portlaoise had a very quick turnaround coming into the final after a hard-fought semi final the previous Friday morning, they were full of confidence following up from their impressive win over KTCS Cill Dara.
Portlaoise faced Ardgilan CS in the cup final, a team who had a comprehensive semifinal win over St Mary's Edenderry making them favourites heading into the final. CBS did not have the start they wanted and the big occasion playing in Energia Park got to some of the younger players. Very early pressure from Ardgilan was too much for CBS which led to an early try which was not converted leaving the score line at 5-0. Portlaoise didn’t hesitate to answer back with a well-worked team play. The winger Paddy Fitzpatrick nearly got in for a try, this further led to a penalty which was confidently struck over by Daniel Thornton leaving the score 5-3. The game ebbed and flowed from end to end for the majority of the first half with CBS coming close on numerous times, but unfortunately not breaching the tough Ardgilan defence along with some questionable refereeing decisions going against them. The Portlaoise men
came out strong at the start of the second half with a flurry of chances, but the Ardgilan defence proved too strong. The Portlaoise CBS men tried their best to answer back but the opposition had other ideas, they got In for a further try and penalty leaving the score line at 13-3 early in the second half. Portlaoise tried again but another Ardgilan try de-flatted the incredibly young CBS team. It was sadly not to be their day and Ardgilan finished strong as CBS made numerous changes. This young CBS team will certainly be back again.
Some great performances on the day from David Brown, Aaron Kingston, Tadgh O‘Sullivan and Cha O’Dwyer to name a few. Onwards and upwards. #fromeachhisbest
