Portlaoise CBS 2-14 Cross and Passion Kilcullen 3-8 Second Year South Leinster ‘C’ Football Championship Final Portlaoise CBS were crowned Second Year South Leinster ‘C’ Football champions following victory over Cross and Passion Kilcullen this morning. They had to contend with snow showers and a bitterly cold wind but, led by the heroics of Darren Brennan, Josh Finn and Oran Darcy in attack, they came good in the end to win. Kilcullen played with the wind in the first half in The Heath and scored straight from the throw in via the powerful Conor Duggan – a player who would have a big impact on the game. Oran Darcy levelled the game soon after and then Portlaoise grabbed the game’s first goal when Josh Finn picked out Darren Brennan and he fired low to the net. Darcy, Finn and Brennan then pointed to give Portlaoise CBS a commanding lead but it did not last. CBS keeper Fergal Naughton made a brilliant save to deny Josh Kelly from point blank range but the resulting 45 from Conor Duggan ended up in the net. And the game was level in the 17th minute when Duggan carved the CBS defence open and picked out Josh Finn who scored the game’s third goal from the angle. The sides swapped points from there to the finish to leave it deadlocked at half time – 2-3 to 1-6. Kilcullen were now playing against the wind but they made a good start to the half with a brace of Rocco Roche frees. And then disaster struck for the CBS when a Roche effort came back off the upright and Adam Barry pounced for a goal to put five between them. The CBS responded through Ryan Doran and then cut the gap to the minimum when Finn combined with Brennan for the latter to score his second goal of the game. That left it 3-6 to 2-10 but the CBS would get the next three points to move ahead. Oran Darcy curled over two lovely efforts before Brennan took his tally for the day to 2-5. Kilcullen responded through Roche and only a brilliant tackle for Cormac Deegan stopped them from potentially having a fourth goal as he snuffed out a very dangerous attack. In the end, Josh Finn had the final say as his point off the outside of his boot brought proceedings to a close and the CBS were champions. SCORERS – Portlaoise CBS: Darren Brennan 2-5 (two frees), Oran Darcy 0-5, Josh Finn 0-3, Ryan Doran 0-1 Kilcullen: Rocco Roche 0-5 (four frees), Conor Duggan and Adam Barry 1-1 each, Josh Finn 1-0, Senan Gallagher 0-1 PORTLAOISE CBS: Fergal Naughton (Portlaoise); Robery Brophy (Portlaoise), Jack Fennell (The Heath), Daniel Booth (The Heath); Harry Browne (The Heath), Conor O’Callaghan (Portlaoise), Cormac Deegan (Annanough); David Brown (Portlaoise), Barry Connolly (Park-Ratheniska); Ryan Doran (Portlaoise), Darren Brennan (Portlaoise), Eoghan Kennedy (Park-Ratheniska); Oran Darcy (Annanough), Jamie Gorman, Josh Finn (Portlaoise), Subs: John Phelan (The Heath) for Gorman (40), Jack Gorman (Emo) for Kennedy (45) KILCULLEN: Matthew O’Gorman; Eoin Dowling, Conor Clarke, Rhys Byrne; Corey Coyne, Luke Costello, Senan Gallagher; Ruaidhri Lawlor, Conor Duggan; Jack Lawler, Rocco Roche, Adam Barry; Josh Kelly, Fionn Frisby, Josh Finn Referee: Johnnie Brennan (St Joseph’s)

Victory for our TY Rugby 7s Team

Today our TY 7s Rugby team travelled to TUS Athlone for a 7s Rugby competition being run by the college. This was the schools first time participating in a 7s Rugby tournament so it was a learning curve for all. There were 6 teams in the competition and St Mary's CBS came away unbeaten with the cup. Our first game was played against a strong Moat side, but it didn't take long for the fast paced Portlaoise 7s to get the ball moving through the hands and it was an interception by Jake Darcy that put CBS on the score sheet. We continued to play well in this game with Jake Andrews powering over. Running out 15 nil winners. Our second game was played against Glenamaddy CC and the Portlaoise lads got going early with a great move setting PJ Larkin up for the try. A few more clever moves kept CBS opening up the Glenamaddy defence to score a few more tries one of these being a wonderful crossfield kick by Jake Darcy to send Larkin in again. A second win for Portlaoise. Our third game was going to be our toughest and it was to be played against the other unbeaten team Roscommon CC. Again the CBS boys started well with a well worked try sending Dylan Roche Duff over the white wash. This game was much more physical than the previous games and Adam Glynn really impressed in defense putting in huge tackles and hits along side his partner in crime and Captain on the day Nathan Duffy. We then moved on to play Gort Community School who were weakened due to numerous injuries which saw them field a weakened team. For this game CBS had a couple of debutants Jamie O’Connor and Luke Kenny Oman, both who impressed. We had now topped the group as an unbeaten team heading into the final. Our final opponents were Roscommon CC who we had already played in a tough and gritty group game. The CBS boys were now getting fairly tired after 4 tough group games. Having said this they didn't show any tiredness and opened the scoring in the first minute with a great move sending PJ Larkin in for a try. Paddy Reddin and Captain Nathan Duffy were both putting in huge tackles and hits to keep the ball in Portlaoise possession. The afore mentioned Reddin then made a huge break, skipping through the centre leaving RCC players in his wake. This break set us up in a good position for another great move to get Larkin in again. For the second half Darcy made great breaks to set up Reddin to run in a great try in the corner, after this we found ourselves perched on our try line defending a RCC attack, it was a massive hit and tackle from Nathan Duffy who helped turn over the ball and with a quick break from our backs we found ourselves nearing the RCC try line, it was a massive carry then from Adam Glynn that saw him power over for the try. A victorious day out for the CBS. Well done lads!
