Below is a list of activities taking place throughout the week. Tuesday, March 22nd- Zak Moradi, a Kurdish young man living and playing senior hurling for Letrim will be in to talk to Junior students from 10am onwards. Starting with 1st Years to 3rd Years. The talk will be approximately 40 mins and students will be called from their classes. Teachers will be asked to supervise. Wednesday, March 23rd- Non-Uniform Day, with students wearing their national jerseys/outfits. Thursday, March 24th- There will be stands set up relating to all nationalities present in our school. Each year group will have an opportunity to view the stands and see some of the national foods from these countries (Thanks to Ms Murphy & her Home Ec Dept). This will be ongoing throughout the day. Friday, March 25th- There will be a cricket match for the students who volunteered to help with the week’s activities. Listen out for our daily announcements read out in different languages to raise awareness and celebrate the different languages spoken by our students. We will be launching a song which staff and students have been recording over the last few weeks. Thanks to Ms Carroll for making this happen. As you can see, we have several different events across the week planned. Thanks to the team of teachers and students who have been working really hard to ensure this week is a fun and successful celebration of our culturally diverse school community. Keep an eye on our social media pages for daily updates.

St. Mary’s CBS took on Naas CBS today in the U19 Midlands League Soccer Final which was played away on Newbridge Town astro. The game finished 3-2 to the Naas side with both Portlaoise goals coming from Ben Doyle. Although today was not our day, we are super proud of this young team and their coaches Ms. Hyland and Mr. Glavin. It was a great team effort by the brothers and well done on getting to this stage in the competition.

Níl saoi gan locht - nobody’s perfect. In ár scoil, we appreciate that everyone is unique and difriúil in their own ways. We respect these differences and gain other perspectives. Everybody makes mistakes, we can forgive ourselves and learn from them. #seachtainnagaeilge #fromeachhisbest

Any parent who wishes to contribute to the school's Communication Policy should take their opportunity to do so today, Wednesday 16th March between 8.30-4.30. We have engaged a facilitator, Blaithnaidh Colhoun, who is in our school today, and if you wish to call, tell the Receptionist you are there to see Ms Colhoun, you will be directed to the office she is working from. It is anonymous and will not take long. As you are aware, there is a huge amount of information flowing between parent, student, teacher, management, and the outside agencies each day. We now have so many forms of communication at our finger tips that it can almost confusing. From this exercise, we hope to make this passage of information clearer and more predictable for everyone. Thank you.
1st Year Footballers Win

Our 1st Year footballers won a fiercely contested game against Heywood yesterday afternoon. The CBS got off to a poor start, conceding 2-1 in the first 10 minutes. After settling into the game, Aaron McCormack got us off the mark with a sweetly taken free off the outside of his right boot. Portlaoise managed to keep the Ballinakill school scoreless for the next 15 minutes as we scored 2-3 from Eoghan Deegan, McCormack and Davy Delaney. With the last kick of the 1st half, Heywood scored a goal from a high ball into the square that deceived all the players and slipped in under the crossbar. That left the teams level 2-4 to 3-1 at half time. The 2nd half was a very tight affair with scores at a premium and both sets of backs on top. Heywood were leading by a point for the final 15 minutes of the match until a Mark O'Connor goal 4 minutes from the end put two between the teams. CBS saw off the onslaught of attacks from Heywood who could not find a way through a resolute CBS defence, leaving the final result 3-6 to 3-4. James Doyle, Sean Powders, Dan Downey, Davy Delaney, Eoghan Deegan and Ross Dunne were all outstanding for the CBS and led the team when we were most under pressure.
