Congratulations to Harry Delaney and Jack Nolan on winning the St. Mary’s CBS “From Each His Best” Scholarship Awards for 2022/2023. CBS has offered two scholarships due to the high number of applications in recent years. As part of this new initiative the CBS are seeking to combine academic excellence, sporting ambition and all-round character development with a close working relationship between teachers and parents. These scholarships aim to facilitate the holistic development of CBS students by rewarding those who drive to achieve academic excellence in conjunction with their sporting careers. The scholarship covers the cost of an iPad, books, and school uniform at the CBS. These scholarships will continue for the duration of the student’s first academic year. Harry Delaney is a pupil of The Heath National School and is a proud winner of the 2022/2023 Scholarship Award. We would like to wish Harry and his family all the best for his time here in the CBS. Harry has numerous sporting endeavors with Football, Hurling and Volleyball just being a few to mention. A member of the Clonad U13 Hurling team he represents his club to the best of his ability being described as a young man with a very hard-working attitude and the ability to just get on with it. Harry looks forward to competing in the Leinster Post Primary Schools' Competitions and representing CBS in the coming months. Jack Nolan is a pupil of St. Colman’s NS Stradbally and is also a proud winner of the 2022/2023 Scholarship Award. We would also like to wish Jack and his family all the best for his time here in the CBS. Jack is an under 13 Champion with Stradbally and has also played his football with Ananough GAA. A lover of all sports, Jack is described as a young man who is very pleasant and polite and very willing to get stuck in and help and a very good leader. Victory for our TY Rugby 7s Team

Today our TY 7s Rugby team travelled to TUS Athlone for a 7s Rugby competition being run by the college. This was the schools first time participating in a 7s Rugby tournament so it was a learning curve for all. There were 6 teams in the competition and St Mary's CBS came away unbeaten with the cup. Our first game was played against a strong Moat side, but it didn't take long for the fast paced Portlaoise 7s to get the ball moving through the hands and it was an interception by Jake Darcy that put CBS on the score sheet. We continued to play well in this game with Jake Andrews powering over. Running out 15 nil winners. Our second game was played against Glenamaddy CC and the Portlaoise lads got going early with a great move setting PJ Larkin up for the try. A few more clever moves kept CBS opening up the Glenamaddy defence to score a few more tries one of these being a wonderful crossfield kick by Jake Darcy to send Larkin in again. A second win for Portlaoise. Our third game was going to be our toughest and it was to be played against the other unbeaten team Roscommon CC. Again the CBS boys started well with a well worked try sending Dylan Roche Duff over the white wash. This game was much more physical than the previous games and Adam Glynn really impressed in defense putting in huge tackles and hits along side his partner in crime and Captain on the day Nathan Duffy. We then moved on to play Gort Community School who were weakened due to numerous injuries which saw them field a weakened team. For this game CBS had a couple of debutants Jamie O’Connor and Luke Kenny Oman, both who impressed. We had now topped the group as an unbeaten team heading into the final. Our final opponents were Roscommon CC who we had already played in a tough and gritty group game. The CBS boys were now getting fairly tired after 4 tough group games. Having said this they didn't show any tiredness and opened the scoring in the first minute with a great move sending PJ Larkin in for a try. Paddy Reddin and Captain Nathan Duffy were both putting in huge tackles and hits to keep the ball in Portlaoise possession. The afore mentioned Reddin then made a huge break, skipping through the centre leaving RCC players in his wake. This break set us up in a good position for another great move to get Larkin in again. For the second half Darcy made great breaks to set up Reddin to run in a great try in the corner, after this we found ourselves perched on our try line defending a RCC attack, it was a massive hit and tackle from Nathan Duffy who helped turn over the ball and with a quick break from our backs we found ourselves nearing the RCC try line, it was a massive carry then from Adam Glynn that saw him power over for the try. A victorious day out for the CBS. Well done lads!

On Monday the CBS Senior Football team played Terenure in the League semi final. It was an intense game the whole way through. A solo run from Kieran O’Donnell gave the lads a huge boost before half time. The intensity remained high right to the whistle but the home side kept the pace running and the match ended 2-13 to 2-8 seeing the CBS go through to the League Final. Well done to the team and their coach Mr. Fitzpatrick and best of luck in the final!!
