Rory O’Connor, known as Rory’s Stories, called to our school on Wednesday ahead of our Mental Health Awareness Week which is running from Monday, 9th to Friday, 13th. Rory spoke honestly and openly to our 3rd years about his life, his addictive personality(which lead him down the road of gambling) and his experience in school. He talked about how he felt that football training training twice a week and a match at the weekend brought him reason, focus and purpose in life. Rory explained hitting rock bottom and having the ‘conversation’ with a family member. He changed the negatives to positives. He proudly showed two pages from his book, with notes from his school principals, highlighting how a person can change. He left the group with five pieces of wisdom; • Think outside the box • Be yourself • Work hard • Don’t be afraid to fail • Trust your gut feeling. Thanks for stopping by @rorysstoriesofficial. Our 3rd Years really enjoyed the talk #fromeachtheirbest #mentalhealthmatters

Phishing Emails sent from School Email Addresses

Phishing Emails sent from School Email Addresses Further to a recent cyber incident in St Mary’s CBS, we’d like to advise our school community of the following: If you get any odd emails / requests from our school through email, try to contact that person through another means (such as a phone call) to verify that it was them. Unusual emails sent from school email addresses asking to click on links etc. should be deleted as these are phishing emails. Phishing is a type of social engineering where an attacker sends a fraudulent (“spoofed”) message designed to trick the recipient into revealing sensitive information to the attacker or to deploy malicious software on the school’s network. Often, phishing emails can appear in your inbox from someone you trust. This is likely because that person’s email address was compromised. In most cases, the simplest thing to do is delete the phishing email. Before doing so, mark the message as ‘spam’ so that you do not continue to receive repeated messages from that email address or number.

Part 2/2 The first half ended with a score of 2-6 to 0-5 with CBS in a comfortable position going into the second half with the wind on their backs. However, the 2nd half was an epic battle. Straight off the throw-in, Granard dropped a free short and their corner forward slipped inside to score a goal. Ross Dunne won a kickout and gave it into Larkin who finished it into the bottom right corner to take his tally 1-3. Granard responded with a pointed free. Seconds later from the kick out, the ball was turned over and Eoin Deegan put it over. Deegan’s score was followed by a super finish by Aaron Tynan who soloed in on the right side and scored a goal at the near post to leave the score 4-7 to 1-7. From here on Cnoc Mhuire dominated a lot of the game. Their talisman Brendan Martin slotted over another placed ball to put 8 between the teams. A great save by Conor Dunne denied Granard a certain goal as he parried a powerful shot over the bar. Cnoc Mhuire kept the pressure up and won the next few kickouts, which lead to two points in succession. Another great save from Conor Dunne stopped a certain goal chance. Martin then scored with an absolute rocket of a shot into the top right corner to put only 5 between the teams with 10 minutes remaining. CBS never gave up with Dennis Browne slotting the ball over from distance, seconds later Cnoc Mhuire were back on the attack and Martin put over another point taking his personal tally to 1-5. Granard really got back into the game with 2 points back to back leaving just 2 points between the sides with only 4 minutes left. Dan Downey stood up and played a captains role by winning very important kickouts for the CBS just when we were pinned in. Eoin Deegan burst out of the defence winning an important free for the CBS, and alleviating some pressure. The free was taken quickly to Aaron Tynan, who immediately passed forward to Ross Dunne. Ross picked out the far corner and scored a fantastic goal across the goal, sealing the victory for CBS. Huge credit to the Granard lads who never gave up with a near goal miss in the last kick of the game. The game ended with a final score of 5-9 to 2-13. It was a great effort by the team and everyone involved. Well done to man of the match Sean Powders who was outstanding in the first half and had the job of curtailing the Granard star-player in the 2nd half. Huge congratulations to the CBS lads and their coaches Mr Lowry and Mr White!!

Today our 1st year footballers travelled up to Granard to take on Cnoc Mhuire in the Br. Hubert Leinster C final. The game roared into life when Davy Delaney won possession, found Joe Larkin, who then gave it into Ross Dunne and he split the posts for the first score of the game within a minute. Next a quick free from Ross Dunne into Joe Larkin gave CBS a 2 point lead. Ross and Davy Delaney linked up again after the kickout for another great point. After Aaron Tynan pressure on the Cnoc Mhuire full back line, the ball was fouled and Joe Larkin added to his tally with another point from a free, leaving the CBS four points to no score after 10 minutes. Cnoc Mhuire responded with their outstanding midfielder Brendan Martin opening their scoring with a long range free. The opening few minutes were even enough but CBS were more clinical. Mark O’Connor made a blistering run through the middle and buried the ball into the back of the net, making the score 1-4 to 0-1 to CBS after 13 minutes. Cnoc Mhuire were finding it hard to get up the field, with the CBS trio of Sean Powders, Denis Browne and Ryan Haslam mopping up any long ball kicked in by the Longford team. Time after time Powders anticipated the kick pass and thwarted many attacks. Portlaoise kept up the pressure. Aaron Tynan took the free that he won himself, and wminuith the ball falling short of goal, Dean O’Connor made no mistake in putting the ball into the back of the net. Brendan Martin won a free on the next Cnoc Mhuire attack, and slotted over to bring his and his schools tally to tow points after 21 minutes. Some give-and-go’s between Sean Powders, Mark O’Connor and Joe Larkin then led to O’Connor splitting the posts from a very tight angle. On the re-start, Cnoc Mhuire’s wing back was given too much space and scored a fantastic point out from the wing. The Granard school were finding it very hard to find a way through a resolute CBS defence, with James Doyle and Denis Browne tackling fiercely to overturn ball. Brendan Martin narrowed the gap between the teams with another placed ball. The first half ended with a score of 2-6 to 0-5 with CBS in a comfortable position going into the second half with the wind on their backs. However, the 2nd half was an epic battle. Best of Luck to our 1st Year Footballers and their coaches Mr. Lowry and Mr. White as they take on Granard today in the Leinster Championship Final at 12.15 in Granard. Below is the match report from the semi-final Vs Tullow CS. Portlaoise CBS got off to a very good start when Joe Larkin put pressure on the Tullow goalie forcing a mistake, which led to the first goal of the game for the Portlaoise men. This would only be the start of CBS finding the net as the goals continued to pour in throughout the first half. This half ended 8-1 to 1-3 in favour of the Portlaoise CBS. The second half was no different and the CBS men proved too much for Tullow C.S. The final score was 13-5 to 2-3. Star performers on the day were Joe Larkin and David Delaney. Thanks to our TY’s for the match report and photos #broughttoyoubyTY
