Portlaoise CBS travelled to Donnybrook last Wednesday the 16th of March for the Pat Rossiter Junior Cup Final. Portlaoise had a very quick turnaround coming into the final after a hard-fought semi final the previous Friday morning, they were full of confidence following up from their impressive win over KTCS Cill Dara.
Portlaoise faced Ardgilan CS in the cup final, a team who had a comprehensive semifinal win over St Mary's Edenderry making them favourites heading into the final. CBS did not have the start they wanted and the big occasion playing in Energia Park got to some of the younger players. Very early pressure from Ardgilan was too much for CBS which led to an early try which was not converted leaving the score line at 5-0. Portlaoise didn’t hesitate to answer back with a well-worked team play. The winger Paddy Fitzpatrick nearly got in for a try, this further led to a penalty which was confidently struck over by Daniel Thornton leaving the score 5-3. The game ebbed and flowed from end to end for the majority of the first half with CBS coming close on numerous times, but unfortunately not breaching the tough Ardgilan defence along with some questionable refereeing decisions going against them. The Portlaoise men
came out strong at the start of the second half with a flurry of chances, but the Ardgilan defence proved too strong. The Portlaoise CBS men tried their best to answer back but the opposition had other ideas, they got In for a further try and penalty leaving the score line at 13-3 early in the second half. Portlaoise tried again but another Ardgilan try de-flatted the incredibly young CBS team. It was sadly not to be their day and Ardgilan finished strong as CBS made numerous changes. This young CBS team will certainly be back again.
Some great performances on the day from David Brown, Aaron Kingston, Tadgh O‘Sullivan and Cha O’Dwyer to name a few. Onwards and upwards. #fromeachhisbest
