Well done to our 2nd Year Basketball team who defeated St. Mel’s of Longford in the Regional semi final today.
Josh Finn got started well and settled Portlaoise into the game by scoring two impressive lay ups and we lead 6-2 after the first quarter. Both teams struggled to get scores on the board but accurate free throwing by Scott Davies kept the gap between the two teams close. Just before half time Callum added two points on the board to put the score 19-16 to Longford.
Ryan Dalton got the scoring started in the second half after a solid screen by Cian Butler gave him the space to score. Great defence gave the CBS all the momentum leading to another basket from Ryan. Josh Finn scored two free throws to put Portlaoise 28-25 up going into the final quarter.
The Portlaoise side were on fire at the start of the final quarter with Daniel Booth scoring a three pointer to start the quarter and in the next play set up Luke Kavanagh to score. Sam Menendez scored a nice midrange shot to further the gap between the two teams. Josh Finn came off another Cian Butler screen to put another 3 points on the board putting it 40-30 with 1:30 mins left on the clock. Longford put pressure on Portlaoise but defence held strong. Daniel Booths 3 pointers were the difference and he popped a third into the basket to secure the win. The final score St. Mary’s CBS 45 to 33 St. Mel’s. The boys now advance to the Regional Final. Well done to all players and their coaches!
