1st Year Rugby Blitz
Created : 30 Mar 2022, 9:22 AM
Archived : 30 May 2022, 12:00 AM
The 1st Year Rugby team competed in the Harry Nicholls Cup Blitz yesterday. They started very well by defeating Kildare Town CS 18-0 and followed up with another win over Nass CBS 12-10 with a last minute try to seal a place in the semi final. They took on Laois rivals, Mountrath CS in the semi final and won 10-7, with a great team effort for a last minute try again to prevail.
They were up against CPC Kilcullen in the final. The game started well for the Portlaoise side but unfortunately a penalty and a converted try by Kilcullen late in the game prevented a comeback. The boys were gutted but were proud of themselves for reaching the Cup Final in what was a very tough competition. Throughout the course of the day, they played excellently as a team and there were standout performances from Shane Foley, Mark Ging, Joe Larkin, Andrew Whelan and Daniel Downey against Naas CBS in particular. Well done lads! #fromeachhisbest

Live Interview with Astronaut Chris Hadfield

1st Year Canice and 2nd Year Eric had the opportunity to hear Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield speak today in a live interview organised by Education Support Centres Ireland.
He has travelled to space on 3 different missions and commanded the International Space Station. He famously played and sang David Bowie's Space Oddity while floating weightless through the ISS.
Today he spoke about how he prepared from a young age to become an astronaut, what daily life on board the ISS was like, such as washing hair, and preparing food, what it was like to go on a space walk and how being in zero gravity effects the human body.
We learned that the astronauts on the ISS are on the same time zone as Ireland so we wake up the time as the astronauts and when they blast off from Florida, the first land they see is Ireland. We even got to meet his dog Henry!
It was a fascinating talk with an emphasis on how students can be preparing now to help them achieve their dreams.

Last Thursday March 24th our Meitheal Team attended their graduation ceremony in St. Peter and St. Paul Church along with teams from the county. They received their certs from Bishop Denis Nulty who spoke of how challenging the task of Meitheal leadership has been this past year and yet the Meitheal leaders achieved so much. He recounted the multiple activities that our own leaders were involved in such as induction days, football leagues, retreats, trip to the cinema, and quizzes. We are very proud of the boys and grateful for their commitment and enthusiasm. The evening ended with a quote from Oscar Romero... ‘We are prophets of a future not our own’. #fromeachhisbest

St. Mary’s CBS Imagine

Archived : 25 May 2022, 12:00 AM
The Students and Staff of St. Mary’s CBS Portlaoise have come together to sing the song Imagine by John Lennon to promote peace and prosperity around the world.
As seen in the music video, directed and arranged by Ms. Mairead Carroll, the students pack dozens of donated supplies into three lorries driven by Martley’s Transport Portlaoise. Various local groups and schools under the leadership of Ms. Eimear Lewens, who ran the campaign to gather donations for shipment to Ukraine, collected the supplies.
With the full support of the student’s the convoy was waved off on its long journey last Monday. The lorry convoy is currently travelling through Europe, on its way to the border of Ukraine, with the hundreds of donated supplies to aid those affected by the war.
This rendition of Imagine is being released to promote Multicultural & Anti-Racism Week at St. Mary’s CBS. All students’ nationalities are celebrated and united with pride and the song certainly expresses that message of unity. Multicultural Week is organised by Mr. Conor Ryan, Ms. Martina Murphy and the Multicultural Committee and saw the whole school come together to celebrate the 45 different countries represented in our school community. The celebrations included guest speakers from Laois Integration Network, Laois Partnership, An Garda Siochana and a food tasting experience for every year group.
The song was recorded and arranged by Ms. Mairead Carroll with instrumentals and vocals by Matthew O’Rourke, Antoni Calka, Karl Mulligan, Mr. Ruairi Tierney, Ms. Nirmala Conlon, Mr. Richard Doyle, Ms. Emily Barrett, Prosper Alonzo, Mr. Conor Ryan, Ms. Yvonne Eglington, Dinny Whelan, Adam Raji, Ms. Evelyn Quinlan, Evidence Onyebuchi and is opened by Ms. Elaine Deegan with a special thanks to Devin Walsh and Aaron O’Connor for all their help.
Thanks also to Jim from Hughes Pharmacy, Mark Martley, Portlaoise Stone and everyone in our community who supports St Mary’s CBS.
